Meet Gina

If you are a follower of local topics, you know that I have been deeply and successfully involved for years in issues that affect each of us in Collier County. My many contributions to our county did not coincide with my decision to run for County Commissioner.

Most of you recognize me for my immense effort to prevent the sale of Alligator Alley. I worked to unite six county governments, multiple cities, and thousands of citizens to communicate to the Governor that his plan to sell our national treasure was detrimental to South Floridians. Go to now for more details.

Instead of being deterred by government indifference, red tape and inefficiency, I resolved to take positive action. My frustrations with government motivated me to come out of retirement. I stand ready to apply my skills to help shape a government that is responsive, sensible, and economical. A government that spends within its means. Few of us are looking for a free ride. We are willing to pay our fair share, no more … no less. When we contribute that fair share, we ask that our tax dollars be spent prudently.

I am a lifelong fiscal conservative. My background as a college economics instructor uniquely qualifies me and shapes my thinking. I want to ask pertinent questions … questions I am not currently hearing asked. Straightforward business analysis needs to be applied consistently to county government. We need to reduce costs while preserving our quality of life. It can be done.

I have hands on experience with our complex county budget. I have identified multiple areas of potential savings and am on record as having made millions of dollars of cost cutting recommendations. I have worked closely enough with county government to know its strengths and weaknesses.

Our county is facing difficult challenges. Most of those difficulties are due to our economy. That economy is not going to improve quickly. There is no silver bullet. Preserving our amenities and our environment … outstanding qualities that brought most of us to Collier County … needs to be job one. It is going to take a genuine understanding of the complexities of the issues we face, plus experience working with government to lead us on a realistic path.

I am qualified, tested, prepared and eager to take on the job of County Commissioner in 2010.
